After attempting to work with the Chinese government for 8 years, the young Dalai Lama escaped from Tibet over the mountains to India. He settled in the Tibetan community in exile in Dharmsala. In 1989 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership of the nonviolent struggle of Tibetans for greater freedom in their country.
