Hall of Double Axes at Knossos
The
Hall of the Double Axes was a double chamber with an inner and an
outer room. The inner room could be closed off by eleven sets of
double doors. It is probable that this was to provide privacy for
some religious rituals which were not to be seen by the public. The wooden throne shown in the picture is a replica

The floor was made of gypsum slabs which also faced the lower walls. The upper walls were decorated with a painted spiral on plaster. Large ox-hide figure-8 shields may have hung on the walls as shown in the artist's depiction.
