Heinrich Schliemann excavated at Mycenae and discovered a number of gold death masks. This one he decided must be Agamemnon, the Greek king of the Trojan
War of The
Iliad. He said that he had looked in the face of Agamemnon and that his skull had disintigrated when he touched it. Though an extraordinary find, it was too old to be the death mask of the famous king, even a Mycenaean king of this name existed, which is far from certain.
