| Ife
is the city where the Yoruba civilization began and according
to Yoruba tradition, the place where the gods descended
to earth. Literally the name means the place of the
dispersion, that is the place from which all Yoruba cities
originated. Located in the southwestern part of present-day
Nigeria, Ife is today the cultural center of the Yoruba.
Ife
bronze art portrays the human form in a naturalistic
way. This head is a depiction of a dead king - the holes
may have been used to attach facial hair.
