| The
United States had a number of possessions by 1903.
The Platt Amendment was removed from the Cuban Constitution
in 1934, the Philippines was granted its independence
in 1946, and the Canal Zone was returned to Panama in 1999.
Hawaii, of course, became a state. The United States still
holds Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Wake Island, Guam.
and Midway Island.
